Ryan McCourt

Artist in Edmonton, Canada

Author: MC

Edmonton artist Ryan McCourt is best known for his constructed metal sculptures. These works range from abstract and figurative welded steel forms, to polychrome reliefs made from crushed aerosol cans, to elegant assemblages and wearable helmets made from soldered brass. His two-dimensional work includes photography, vexillography, and ambiguous illustration. His experimental music as “The Synthesist” explores aesthetic and existential philosophical themes. McCourt founded the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop, a cooperative shared studio, and Common Sense, an artist-run gallery. His work has earned numerous honours, and is held in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, and beyond; nevertheless, McCourt has also been the subject of repeated institutional censorship, by municipal government, arts organisations, and public broadcasters.

Man o’ the World

Posted on : 2004: 2026 by MC in Figurative Steel

Welded steel, 75 x 27 x 24, 2004. “A man of the world” is the phrase for someone seasoned and unshockable, at ease in any company. The portrait bust is the format cultures have long used to honor public figures: head and shoulders on a column, raised so the viewer looks up. Man o’ the … Continue reading Man o’ the World →

Painted welded steel, 120 x 108 x 90, 2003. Solus is Latin for alone, and the room the sculpture offers is a bath. At ten feet high, nine wide and seven and a half deep, it can be climbed into, or entered from below. A grab handle stands at the edge of an opening, and a … Continue reading Solus →

Behind the frame a large ring rises above everything else in the composition and reads as the sun coming up. … Continue reading Early Riser →

The Abduction of Liberty

Posted on : 2003: 2026 by MC in Figurative Steel

Painted welded steel, 74 x 42 x 54, 2003. Liberty is known by two things she holds: a torch in her raised arm and a tablet in the other. The raised arm of this figure remains, ending in an open tube with nothing in it. The other arm ends bluntly, without a hand to hold a … Continue reading The Abduction of Liberty →
