Maquette for Playhouse

Painted welded steel, 12 x 10 x 11, 2005.

A playhouse is two things in English: the small house built for children to play in, and the theatre. The sculpture is both at once. The entrance is a short flight of steps climbing beside tall vertical folds that hang like a curtain. Going up those steps takes a visitor out of the street and onto a raised platform, and standing on it makes them a performer.

The stage has a single piece of equipment. A flat-topped half-cylinder stands on the platform as a table, the prop a scene gets played around: something to set a meal on, lean against or hide behind. An arched wall bounds the platform on one side, and a round opening is cut through the wall behind, set where a painted moon or a spotlight would hang. The folds at the platform’s edge stand in for wings.
