Ryan McCourt

Artist in Edmonton, Canada

Author: MC

Edmonton artist Ryan McCourt is best known for his constructed metal sculptures. These works range from abstract and figurative welded steel forms, to polychrome reliefs made from crushed aerosol cans, to elegant assemblages and wearable helmets made from soldered brass. His two-dimensional work includes photography, vexillography, and ambiguous illustration. His experimental music as “The Synthesist” explores aesthetic and existential philosophical themes. McCourt founded the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop, a cooperative shared studio, and Common Sense, an artist-run gallery. His work has earned numerous honours, and is held in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, and beyond; nevertheless, McCourt has also been the subject of repeated institutional censorship, by municipal government, arts organisations, and public broadcasters.

Soldered brass, 15 x 8 x 9, 2008. The title adapts a sentence from Matisse’s “Notes of a Painter” (1908). The brass material gives the sculpture a timeless, ancient quality, reminiscent of a long-lost era of kings and warriors. The bird-like beak and … Continue reading Helm of the Elvish King →

Welded steel, 74 x 18 x 18, 2007. Minerva is patron of wisdom and of the crafts, the goddess of people who work with their heads and hands. The portrait bust is the form a culture uses to honor someone it wants remembered: head and shoulders, raised on a column so that the viewer looks up. … Continue reading Minerva →

Ganesha, Patron of the Arts

Painted welded steel, 63 x 19 x 16, 2007. Ganesha is the god invoked first. An Indian classical dance or music recital customarily opens with a salutation to him, and so does the start of a book, a building or a journey.
