Welded steel, concrete, refractory brick, 15.5 x 28.5 x 14, 2019.
A runaway object is dangerous in proportion to its mass, and this sculpture is almost all mass: concrete and brick and steel fixed to it. The speed is supplied by the coil of steel, like smoke streaming back along the length of the engine. The viewer imagines the velocity implied in the mass. The engine is alone. The coupling at its rear has nothing behind it, so there are no cars to pull and no one at the controls. What remains is mass and direction. Autonomy is the condition modern art claims for itself, a work answerable to nothing outside its own form.
