Welded steel, 19 x 19.5 x 7, 2019.
The sculpture has the architecture of a ritual and the contents of a habit. A stack of tubes carries a single cup, and a frame stands over it like a lintel: altar, offering, gate. The same arrangement reads as a kitchen counter, with a cup waiting beneath a rack of hooks. The title says the two readings are one.
A ritual gains meaning from repetition, and a habit loses attention to it, so the phrase names an act repeated until it is automatic and still performed with form. The evenly spaced teeth of the overhead bar count out the repetitions, each the same as the last, and the cup waits below them to be taken up again.
