Welded steel, 10.5 x 10 x 8, 2019.
Curiosity names a temperament and a kind of object: the creature that cocks its head to listen, and the oddity kept in a collector’s cabinet. The sculpture is both. A bowl is tilted on a stack of tubes the way a head is tilted toward a sound, and everything in the figure is an opening: the bowl open to what is above it, the tubes open at both ends, the whole reading as a thing built to take the world in. At ten inches it is also cabinet-sized, a small, strange object to be picked out and looked into.
A viewer has to lean in to look inside the tubes, which makes the viewer curious in turn, while the bowl turns up toward the viewer’s face. Looking and being looked at are the same act here.
