The Old City

Soldered brass, 13 x 39 x 11, 2017.

Created in residence at the Hambidge Center, USA.

The sculpture reads as a city laid out along one ground line, with the standing parts at the left and the fallen parts at the right. At the left a crenellated wall encloses a low court, a tall chimney-shaped tower rises beside it, and a post carries a small plate at its top like a lookout or a lamp. Toward the right the forms lie down. The ribbed dome is on its side, the leaf-shaped tray beside it is flat, and the curved stems rise out of the wreckage like plants growing through it. The standing city and the ruined one are the same object, so the work shows a place in use and a place in ruins at once.
