Bible Study: The Holy City

The pages of this Bible are terrain. The book lies open and tilted toward the viewer on a splayed support, and neither page carries text. The left page is a woven wire mesh and the right is a sheet pierced in a pattern of interlocking circles, both of steel. Each page is a different kind of ground, and the spread joins them.

The landscape continues past the pages. A plate with two round arches rises at the upper left like an arcade standing on a horizon. At the upper right a large looped arch stands over a hanging chain and a rounded knob, and a ribbed rod lies across the foreground in front of the book. The book sits in the middle of this terrain and is part of it.

A Bible study is a session spent over the book, and the title names the Holy City as its subject. The sculpture gives that subject as a place. The page is the ground of the city, and the arcade and the arches stand at its edges. A visitor who leans over the spread to study the book finds terrain to look at.
