Revival

Painted welded steel, 86 x 39 x 64, 1999.

A revival is a meeting held to bring a congregation back to life, and it depends on a voice that reaches a crowd. The sculpture is built for whoever supplies that voice. It stands eighty-six inches high and is large enough to climb into: a platform with a low step at its foot carries a single seat with a rounded armrest and a footplate. A tall panel rises behind the seat, a framed canopy with a half-round roof stands over it, and a twisted post marks one front corner. A wide pipe projects forward below the arm, with its bore open to the street.
