Ryan McCourt

Artist in Edmonton, Canada

Author: MC

Edmonton artist Ryan McCourt is best known for his constructed metal sculptures. These works range from abstract and figurative welded steel forms, to polychrome reliefs made from crushed aerosol cans, to elegant assemblages and wearable helmets made from soldered brass. His two-dimensional work includes photography, vexillography, and ambiguous illustration. His experimental music as “The Synthesist” explores aesthetic and existential philosophical themes. McCourt founded the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop, a cooperative shared studio, and Common Sense, an artist-run gallery. His work has earned numerous honours, and is held in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, and beyond; nevertheless, McCourt has also been the subject of repeated institutional censorship, by municipal government, arts organisations, and public broadcasters.

In the Studio

Posted on : 2001: 2026 by MC in Abstract Steel

Welded steel, 35 x 32 x 22, 2001. The studios of different arts keep different equipment and the same arrangement. Things lean on walls, hang from hooks and sit on the floor at the foot of whatever they serve, and the sculpture is made of that arrangement. Nearly every part serves more than one trade. … Continue reading In the Studio →

Welded steel, 2000. The exclamation mark turns the title into an announcement, the way a shop sign calls out what it has in stock. The sculpture sets out three kinds of provision, each in the form its kind takes. A squat jar stands at the lower left with rods and a disc standing in it, … Continue reading Supplies! →

Idiot Box

Painted welded steel, 2000. “Idiot box” is the slang name for the television, and the sculpture is built on the plan of a set with an antenna: a heavy body, a pair of uprights standing on top of it, and a cord. The body is a stack of layered horizontal slabs with a drum fitted … Continue reading Idiot Box →

Portrait of a Still Life

Posted on : 2000: 2026 by MC in Abstract Steel

Welded steel, 12 x 12 x 12, 2000. A portrait is made of a person and a still life of things, and the title gives the portrait’s attention to the still life. The sculpture does it by staging. A flask with a round base and a narrow neck stands at the right of a dark … Continue reading Portrait of a Still Life →

Slow Turning

Posted on : 2000: 2026 by MC in Abstract Steel

Welded steel, 2000. “Slow Turning” describes what happens to the leftovers of a meal when the washing-up is put off: milk turns, gravy sets, a skin forms. The sculpture is the pile of dishes that waits while this goes on. A wide shallow dish with a knob handle at one end rides on top. Under … Continue reading Slow Turning →
