Ryan McCourt

Artist in Edmonton, Canada

Author: MC

Edmonton artist Ryan McCourt is best known for his constructed metal sculptures. These works range from abstract and figurative welded steel forms, to polychrome reliefs made from crushed aerosol cans, to elegant assemblages and wearable helmets made from soldered brass. His two-dimensional work includes photography, vexillography, and ambiguous illustration. His experimental music as “The Synthesist” explores aesthetic and existential philosophical themes. McCourt founded the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop, a cooperative shared studio, and Common Sense, an artist-run gallery. His work has earned numerous honours, and is held in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, and beyond; nevertheless, McCourt has also been the subject of repeated institutional censorship, by municipal government, arts organisations, and public broadcasters.

Beneath it a plate drilled with two holes is pinned along one edge like a hinge leaf, so the horizon … Continue reading Canadian Sunset →

Soldered brass, stone, 13 x 15 x 8, 2008. Aesthetiscope is a stethoscope for beauty. The title joins “aesthetic,” from the Greek for perception by the senses, to the instrument a doctor presses to a chest to hear what goes on inside. The chest-piece here is a wide bowl raised on a dark column, with curved … Continue reading Aesthetiscope →

Welded steel, brass, 2008. Ganesha Fireplace is a household shrine in which the fire is the offering. Ganesha is the god invoked first, at the start of any undertaking and at any threshold. The sculpture seats him at the top of the hearth, above the opening where the fire is lit. The arched opening has … Continue reading Ganesha Fireplace →
